According to the Port of Seattle, Sea-Tac Airport has seen the fastest-growing number of passengers out of any major airport in the US over the last five years, with a 43% increase in passenger traffic during that time period. This rapid jump has led to delays and idling on the runway. While a new international terminal is in the works for late 2019, the airport in the mean time has completed a new two-story annex to Concourse D.
Adding six gates and over 32,000 square feet of space, the annex was designed by international architectural firm HOK with the region’s unique quality’s in mind. The design includes a glass curtain wall and wooden trusses sourced from local Douglas firs. Sustainability features such as reflective roofing, air curtains, and a rainwater management system that irrigates landscaping may make the structure the first airport terminal facility in North America to receive LEED Silver certification.
The new annex will be used for hardstand operations, meaning that passengers will be shuttled to and from planes rather than boarding and disembarking directly. The facility will officially open to passengers later in the month.
