This Friday, the northern Seattle neighborhood of Lake City will see the completion of a project seven years in the making: a lower-income housing complex on the former site of Fire Station 39 on 127th Street. Developed and managed by the Lower Income Housing Institute, the building contains 70 units of affordable housing as well as a four-classroom preschool run by the Refugee Women’s Alliance. The complex also features a courtyard with child’s play area as well as a rooftop community garden.
The building includes units ranging from studios at $526 a month to family-oriented 3 bedrooms topping out at $1353 a month. The development is targeted to serve those making between 30% to 60% of the median income in King County. The design by Runeberg Architectural Group also prioritized sustainability, including a solar array. The building has been dubbed the Tony Lee after the longtime Seattle housing rights activist.
