Back in the fall of 2017, Amazon announced plans for leasing all of the office space in Rainier Square Tower, a massive project that will be the second-tallest skyscraper in Seattle upon completion. Now it appears the tech giant has abandoned these plans, as indicated in a marketing flier obtained by the website GeekWire. The Rainier Tower space would have provided 722,000 sq ft of capacity for the company, with potential for over 3,500 employees.
Amazon had previously threatened to pull out of the tower during last year’s head tax controversy. Though that issue has since been resolved, it now appears that the company intends to sublet the new Rainier Square Tower’s 30 floors of office space to other companies.
This news follows hot on the heels of Amazon’s decision to scrap plans for a second headquarters in New York City, as well as statements that seem to indicate a halt to future Seattle expansion after current projects are completed. In response to the Rainier Square Tower revelation, the company has reiterated its commitment to current construction in South Lake Union, as well as the 9,000 roles it currently has open in the Seattle area.
