Modular buildings, which are fabricated in pieces offsite before being assembled onsite, have long been touted as affordable and sustainable alternatives in housing construction. But now larger buildings are getting the pre-fab treatment as well. Last week, Dutch hotel chain Citizen M began stacking up its latest building in South Lake Union.
CitizenM constructs its rooms in a factory in Poland. The modular rooms were built to include all furnishings “except mattress pillows and towels” according to a press release. The rooms were then shipped on the Thorco Legacy, and arrived at the Port of Everett in August. Larger elements such as stairs and hallways were built onsite. Now all that remains is the stacking process.
According to contractor Mortenson, the modular approach reduces construction costs, limits interruptions from pedestrians and traffic onsite, and reduces waste by 60 percent. CitizenM has had much success in other cities including New York, Amsterdam, Paris and London. The Seattle location is set to open in 2019.
