What can you do with 400 sq ft of space? That is the question the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture is asking. The department recently released a request for cultural space concepts that can fit within a one-story 400 sq ft structure (or three 120 sq ft structures if you’re feeling particularly adventurous). Suggestions provided in the bulletin include a puppet theater, an art gallery, a writers residence, or even a place for a tea (or coffee!) ceremony.

The proposed spaces can be built on private land or city-owned surplus property, but the final project will belong to a relevant community or cultural organization. Priority will be given to underserved communities. In addition to the space limitation, the design must also work without heating or plumbing, though electricity can be provided. Applicants must commit to maintenance and programming for at least 5 years.

The approved spaces will be designed and constructed by Sawhorse Revolution, and organization focused on teaching teens carpentry skills. Mentors from LMN and Olson Kundig will also assist in the project. The deadline for submissions is October 14.
