The future of the former Seattle Times building has once again changed direction. The building, originally built to house the newspaper in the 1930s, was purchased by Onni Group in 2013 with the intention of redeveloping the property into residential units. As of this summer, though, the real estate group has decided to instead build two office towers on the site.
The original building, designed by Art Deco architect Robert Reamer, was largely demolished in 2017, save for the iconic south and east facades which have been preserved as landmarks. The new development will consist of a 16-story and an 18-story tower curved away from each other in an hourglass shape. The project, designed by firm Perkins + Will, will also include over 50,000 sq ft of retail space.
Onni attributed the change in direction to the booming office space market in the surrounding South Lake Union neighborhood. But the shift seems conveniently timed to a June Seattle Times report that 14% of apartments in the area lay vacant. Construction will begin in late 2019, with an aim for completion in 2021.
