After almost 60 years in operation, the Yakima Speedway and Ice Rink will be sold to make room for a new mixed-use development project. The proposed plan, currently known as Sun Square Yakima, includes a hotel, office space and retail area. The current ice rink will be replaced with a NHL-sized ice arena. Ted Pollock, the owner of the track for over 50 years, put the 46-acre property on the market nearly a year ago, spurring interest as far away as New England. The property boasts around one-fifth of a mile of frontage on I-82, making it a strong choice for commercial use. The sale to a group of Yakima investors is set to close at the end of January 2018. There have long been rumors of the track among members of the racing community, who point to its important role of grooming local drivers for national competition.
