Three years ago, Expedia announced it’s move from Bellevue to a 40-acre waterfront property on Elliott Bay formerly occupied by the pharmaceutical company Amgen. Other than renovations to old Amgen buildings and the nearby bike trail, the specific plans for the site have since been unclear. On Friday, however, ZGF Architects shared details to the public about what the new Seattle campus of the online travel company will entail.
The new facility will be built around principles of biophilic design, a school which aims to integrate natural and human environments. In the case of the Expedia campus, this will be accomplished through natural lighting, open views of the nearby park and bay, and outdoor workspaces with Wi-Fi accessibility. A central atrium will feature wood accents, interior landscaping, 11-foot windows and skylights. Taking cues from the nearby bay, the building will also feature more industrial-inspired spaces of exposed steel and concrete. The new campus will also include a bike storage and repair facility, shuttle service to Eastside and Downtown, and a gym.
The campus is currently projected to open in Fall 2019, and will have space for up to 5,000 employees.
