Facebook has confirmed a lease of 38,000 sqft in the Block 16 building of the Spring District in Bellevue, Washington. Facebook had been courting the Spring District, a 16-block mixed-use development centered around a future light rail expansion, for months, while also leasing space in several downtown Bellevue buildings. The new Facebook office will have prominent neighbors, including a new headquarters for outdoor retailer REI and the Global Innovation Exchange, a technology graduate program in part sponsored by Microsoft. The Block 16 building is expected to be open for occupancy by 2020.
The Seattle area is currently Facebook’s second biggest engineering center after its Menlo Park homebase. The social giant has already acquired two major buildings in the Seattle city limits in the last few years, with a third on the way in South Lake Union. Facebook also has a campus in Redmond, Washington focused on its Oculus technology. Last year, the company reported over 3,000 Seattle area employees, up from 2,000 in March. With an expanding workforce and office space, Facebook may soon rival Amazon’s presence in the Seattle tech hub.
